The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House Queensland communities continue to experience repeat youth offending, including offences committed by youth offenders who breach bail conditions.

There is community concern regarding whether current bail and sentencing arrangements are operating as intended to reduce repeat offending and protect the community.

Queensland Police Service members require appropriate legislative authority, resources, and custodial options to respond effectively to repeat youth offending, particularly where bail conditions are breached.

Queensland residents have a reasonable expectation to feel safe in their homes and communities.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to review youth justice bail and sentencing laws, including the operation of the Adult Crime, Adult Time provisions, to ensure they are effective in addressing repeat serious youth offending and maintaining community safety.

Your petitioners request that the Legislative Assembly:

  1. review the effectiveness of current youth justice bail and sentencing laws, including the Adult Crime, Adult Time provisions;
  2. consider amendments to bail laws to address repeat breaches of bail by youth offenders; and
  3. ensure the Queensland Police Service has appropriate legislative powers, resources, and custodial options to respond to repeat youth offending.
