The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House Queensland maritime industry is vital to our economy, supporting trade through major ports like Brisbane, yet we lack a state-based facility for advanced, hands-on training and shipping, navigation, engineering and related fields. This gap forces aspiring maritime professionals to seek education interstate or overseas, limiting local job opportunities and skills development amid growing demand four skilled workers and shipping, offshore energy, and maritime tourism.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to:

  1. Investigate the feasibility of establishing a Queensland maritime training school in Brisbane, equipped with dedicated traineeships, for practical seafaring experience.
  2. Do all in its power to ensure funding in the state budget for long-term study courses covering all areas of shipping, including deck operations, marine engineering in partnership with industry. 
  3. Ensure the school promotes regional access, apprenticeships and inclusivity to build a skilled workforce exciting for Queensland.
