4413-26 End unfair employment barriers for people with Amblyopia (Lazy eye) in Queensland
Eligibility - Residents of the State of Queensland2 Navua Street
STRATHPINE QLD 4500
The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House people with Amblyopia (Lazy eye) in one eye are often automatically excluded from Queensland public sector roles, such as police officers and ambulance paramedics, due to strict medical standards that disqualifies them based on reduced vision in the affected eye-even when overall vision is good, functional and safe for the job. This condition affects one eye but typically has no significant impact on daily performance, depth perception in adapted adults, or ability to meet genuine job requirements. Yet it creates unequal access to careers compared to those with standard vision.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to investigate current medical and vision standards in Queensland government roles (including Queensland Police Service, Queensland Ambulance Service) that lead to blanket exclusions for Amblyopia. Your petitioners, also request the House to amend the standards to allow case-by-case assessments based on actual functional vision and job-specific safety, rather than automatic disqualification; and to promote fair employment opportunities for people with this condition while upholding necessary safety requirements.
