The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the need to amend the minimum separation distance between basketball courts and residential homes by increasing the requirement from 50 to 200 metres for all courts, existing and new, and to introduce a playing curfew so use is prohibited between 1700 and 0900.

Residents near these facilities experience ball bouncing and noise from early morning to late evening, often after dark where lighting is provided. The irregular nature of the noise is difficult to tune out and is causing stress and loss of amenity for nearby households.
The 50 metre standard does not reflect modern conditions. Since the guidance was updated in 2014, population growth and higher density living have increased court use, turning some locations into near continuous noise sources. This disrupts children studying, people working from home, shift workers who sleep during the day, and residents trying to enjoy their property.

Despite approaches to council, police, and local members of parliament, effective action has not followed. Your petitioners request the House review the issue and adopt statewide settings that balance recreation with residents right to quiet enjoyment.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to amend the requirements for all existing and newly constructed basketball courts so they must be located no less than 200 metres from residential homes, rather than the current 50 metres, and to introduce a playing curfew with clear, enforceable signage at each facility prohibiting play between 1700 and 0900.
