4404-26 Proserpine Hospital Rebuild
Eligibility - Residents of the State of QueenslandP.O. Box 715
PROSERPINE QLD 4800
The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that The Proserpine Hospital no longer meets the health needs of the Whitsunday Region. The facility is a mishmash of old and newer buildings, is heritage listed, and is widely regarded as outdated and constrained. It has only around 12 on-site parking spaces for a 33-bed hospital, creating access and safety issues.
Since the last redevelopment, the population serviced by the hospital has grown significantly. Proserpine Hospital now serves the wider Whitsundays community and thousands of tourists each year yet lacks essential modern services such as an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and MRI. Ongoing piecemeal upgrades cannot address fundamental limitations in capacity, layout, access, and future expansion.
Proserpine is centrally located, close to the Bruce Highway and Whitsunday Coast Airport, making it the most accessible and appropriate location for a modern regional hospital serving the Whitsundays.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all in its power to ensure a master plan and construction of a new multistorey Proserpine Hospital, ideally on land acquired across the road from the existing site, allowing the current hospital to operate during construction.
The new hospital should include at least 50 new beds, ICU, MRI, a modern emergency department designed for patient comfort, a rooftop helipad, and a minimum of 45 car spaces with provision for future multi-level parking and large-scale hospital expansion.
