The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that the Australian National Flag is a recognised symbol of the nation’s unity, history, and sovereignty. Your petitioners are increasingly concerned by incidents involving the deliberate desecration of the Australian Flag, including acts of cutting, tearing, or burning.

Your petitioners believe such conduct is disrespectful to the nation and its citizens and undermines the significance of the Flag as a national symbol.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to consider the introduction or strengthening of legislation to prohibit the intentional desecration of the Australian National Flag, including the establishment of appropriate penalties, such as fines, criminal charges or jail time, proportionate to the seriousness of the conduct.
