4395-26 Let South East Queensland Vote on Daylight Saving
Eligibility - Citizens of Queensland29C Maiden Hair Place
GOLD COAST QLD 4209
The Petition of citizens of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that the last referendum on daylight saving in Queensland was held in 1992 - over three decades ago. Since then, South East Queensland (SEQ) has grown significantly in population, economic activity, and national integration, yet remains out of sync with the daylight-saving schedules of New South Wales, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, and Tasmania.
This misalignment causes:
- Disruption to business and trade across state borders
- Confusion in national broadcasting, transport, and scheduling
- Missed lifestyle and tourism opportunities for SEQ residents
We acknowledge that regional Queensland may not support daylight saving, however, SEQ - home to over 70% of the state’s population - deserves the opportunity to revisit this issue through a democratic process.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to
- Conduct a new referendum on daylight saving in Queensland, or
- Trial a dual-time zone arrangement where daylight saving applies only to South East Queensland.
We believe this approach respects regional diversity while addressing the evolving needs of SEQ.
