The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House our iconic Aussie bushland and forests are the heart of the Earth's natural cooling system. Our bushland is being thoughtlessly cleared, accelerating regional heat, as we see the effects of climate change. Additionally, land clearing is endangering thousands of native species, including the koala.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to end deforestation, invest in a regenerative future, and amend legislation to achieve the following:

  1. Use version 14 mapping to protect old and high-value regrowth native trees.
  2. Mandate infill development, prioritising cleared land before clearing intact native woodland for housing/commercial expansion.
  3. Apply strict regulations on land clearing of remaining woody vegetation for grazing purposes, including all Category X, B and C areas.
  4. Support the grazing industry's transition by funding and incentivising the planting of "shade, shelter, and fodder trees" and "shelterbelts" for landscape and koala and other habitat resilience.
