Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House that dogs in Queensland are experiencing preventable heat stress, paw burns and injuries from being transported in open ute trays without shade or padded surfaces, particularly in warm weather. Even at temperatures around 23–26°C, metal trays, road surfaces and enclosed spaces can become dangerously hot.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to introduce amendments to the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 to:
Prohibit transporting dogs in open ute trays or trailers when the ambient temperature exceeds 23–25°C unless adequate shade, non-metal insulated padding, and safe restraint are provided.
Require that dogs walked on public footpaths or roads be controlled using a harness rather than a neck collar to reduce the risk of neck injuries and heat-related stress. These measures will prevent unnecessary suffering, heatstroke and injury to dogs across Queensland.
