Queensland citizens draws to the attention of the House the urgent need for increased traffic and pedestrian safety measures at Highfields State School along the New England Highway.

The rapid growth of Highfields has resulted in a significant increase in traffic around Highfields State School (692 students). This heavy traffic flow on the Highway poses a serious threat to students, parents, neighbouring kindergarten children and resident pedestrians. The recent approval of high-density housing developments near the school will further exacerbate this growing danger.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all within its power to urge the Department of Transport and Main Roads and the Department of Education to prioritise community safety by immediately:

• Implementing a reduced speed zone (40 km/hr) with flashing light signage on the New England Highway in both directions, like those protecting Harlaxton and Wilsonton State Schools.

• Install a safety barrier between the footpath and the Highway where there is less than one metre between the footpath and oncoming traffic to prevent pedestrians from accidentally tripping, falling or rolling onto coming traffic.

• Install speed cameras, red-light cameras and phone use detection cameras at all controlled crossings and along the highway.

These crucial measures will safeguard children whilst having minimal impact on vehicle traffic bounded by Highfields Road an Borghardt Road (530 metres). By acting now, we can prevent a potential tragedy and ensure a safe environment for the Highfields community.
