TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the recent announcement by Premier Steven Miles that Waraba (Caboolture West) is to be made Queensland’s newest priority development area to speed up the delivery of homes for 70,000 including 25 per cent affordable/social housing. The area is woven through with significant wildlife/green corridors and situated in a location already under enormous traffic/environmental pressure due to continued population growth throughout the region.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all within its power to ensure that the new development serve as a model of environmentally sensitive and energy efficient development by:

1) maintaining the existing green corridors and providing wildlife bridges;

2) mitigating heat island risk by maintain and increasing tree cover and banning the use of dark coloured roofing which is proven to increase temperature;

3) including passive design principals in all social affordable and affordable housing for energy efficient temperature regulation and requiring same throughout the development;

4) requiring solar panels on all buildings including social/affordable; and

5) ensuring adequate public transport.
