Queensland residents draw to the attention of the House that a lack of investment in pedestrian & cycle infrastructure is causing risks to the safety of children making their way to/from Oakleigh State School (Ashgrove).

Transport and Main Roads Metroad 5, a sub-arterial road comprising Wardell Street & Steward Road (Ashgrove) is a legacy thoroughfare which does not meet current best practice design criteria. The road bisects the catchment of Oakleigh State School isolating those on the eastern side of the school’s catchment from their place of learning & community hubs.

With the growth in SEQ population has come increased traffic flows on M5 facilitated by increased investment in road infrastructure by the Qld Government. The Qld Government has not invested in pedestrian infrastructure to keep pace with the hazards of higher volumes of vehicles traveling at speed (60 kph) interacting with pedestrians and cyclists (particularly primary school aged children & heavy vehicles) at the controlled intersection of Frasers Road.

In order to meet current best practice, we request a preferred route be created to separate pedestrian users crossing M5, create synergy with the use of current BCC infrastructure & prioritize pedestrian crossing of Frasers (District) Rd to transit to/from Oakleigh State School.

Your petitioners, therefore, urgently request the House to do all within its power to enter a joint funding arrangement with the Brisbane City Council to;

  • Upgrade the Frasers Bridge pedestrian underpass,
  • Install a pedestrian prioritized crossing of Frasers (District) Road, east of Tay Street intersection.
