The petition of citizens of Queensland draws to the attention of the House a massive development to house 2000-3000 people has been proposed for Harbour Beach at East Point in Mackay. It will put people’s lives at risk, remove public open space, eradicate protected vegetation affecting bird and turtle populations, and adversely impact on the adjourning fish nursery. Natural hazard: The safety of the southern portion of East Point depends on how well the current rock wall holds under stress from large Pioneer River floods, cyclones, and storm surges. It has failed before. Loss of “of concern” vegetation. The developer plans to destroy eighty per cent of protected “of concern” Casuarina woodland in the northern portion of the spit. Coastal developments are eradicating this ecosystem locally. At least 141 bird species have been recorded at this location, some migratory species from as far away as Siberia. Turtles nest here. Loss of habitat means loss of species. Loss of community property. Private developments are reducing public access to Mackay’s beaches, so it is important that East Point, a popular family camping and fishing public place be managed and protected and kept in public ownership.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to ensure that the “most appropriate” use of this leasehold land, as open space, is obtained, and that East Point be set aside as a public recreation reserve for the benefit of all the residents of Mackay for all time.
