MALANDA QLD 4885
Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House that allegations of misconduct have been raised by members of the public against Tablelands Regional Council, concerning actions in relation to the Patrick English Pavilion, Malanda. The allegations include:
- Providing false and misleading information to the public;
- Withholding key information from councillors, including the implications of a Local Heritage Overlay;
- Failing to disclose a 2023 independent engineering report, that outlined serious structural defects, posing potential risks to public safety;
- Failing to alert councillors or the public that the 2023 engineering report predicted the structural failure of the building within 12 months;
- Failing to disclose potential conflicts of interest;
- Failing to properly respond to formal complaints, including a complaint referral by the Crime and Corruption Commission;
- Warning of consequence for complainants, if complaints are further raised with council.
An inquiry is warranted to establish whether:
a) Information provided during public consultation processes were misleading in order to skew opinion away from the option to restore the pavilion.
b) TRC withheld key information from councillors and the public about the pavilion.
c) TRC provided false information to the public.
d) The pavilion has been maintained in such a manner as to keep it safe.
e) Public safety was put at risk by TRC not acting on engineering reports.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all in their power to formally investigate Tablelands Regional Council over this issue, including interviewing complainants and witnesses and examining all documentation relating to the pavilion.
