Keep our sovereign capability to manufacture copper – save Mount Isa
Eligibility - Residents of the State of Queensland18 Miles Street
MOUNT ISA QLD 4825
Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the failure of Glencore to uphold their obligation to develop the Queensland people’s copper resource (with 157 million tonnes of copper ore at 1.7% available in 2022), threatening the future of Queensland’s ability to smelt copper in Mount Isa and to refine it in Townsville. This is despite Glencore having significant favourable conditions granted to them via the Mount Isa Mines Act, which are granted in good faith. This good faith has not been repaid.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all in its power to ensure that the copper smelter in Mount Isa is not permitted to be closed, and a willing miner is immediately installed to realise Queensland’s abundant copper resource.
