Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the Crisafulli LNP Government’s decision to cease funding for the Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) from July 1, 2025.

The EDO is currently funded by the government as a not-for-profit organisation that provides access to justice, runs legal cases, and advocates for changes in environmental law. EDO also offers legal advice and resources to the public.

Prior to the election of the current government, the LNP made a direct commitment to continue funding for the EDO if they won the election last October. Now-Minister Sam O’Connor also said when he made this commitment “we believe the state government should continue to provide funding towards their operations just like they do with other community legal services”.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to call on the LNP Government to deliver on its election commitment, in line with Minister Sam O’Connor’s statements that funding would continue if the LNP was successful in the state election last October.
