TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House that Moreton Bay’s migratory shorebirds need increased protection.

Migratory shorebirds are a protected species that need to roost peacefully without being disturbed by human instigated activities including dogs off leash, operation of drones, unnecessary use of small watercraft and recreational angling close to roosting and feeding sites.

Legislation, regulations, and zoning plans for the Moreton Bay Marine Park should be updated to preclude coastal development that destroys or impacts adversely on shorebird feeding and roosting areas such as the proposal for construction of residential dwellings on the shorebird habitat next to Toondah Harbour.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to take action which ensures that:

1. The Moreton Bay Marine Park Zoning Plan incorporates effective measures to protect shorebird roosting and feeding areas;

2. The Park’s boundaries are reviewed to include significant shorebird roosting areas which are located outside the Marine Park boundaries; and

3. The legislation, regulations and zoning plans for the Moreton Bay Marine Park are reviewed to improve protection of shorebird habitat.
