The petition of electors of the Division of Burnett draws to the attention of the House that Queensland driver licenses can be extended for periods of one, two or three years. The learner licence has only a three year period of validity and yet costs more than the driver licence for the same period. Learner Drivers are mostly students and on relatively low incomes, and regularly need their learner licence for little more than twelve months while they complete the learning process and driver licence test. Paying for three years for a learner licence is a high cost for many young people.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to review the cost and length of validity of the Queensland learner’s licence and give consideration to a learner licence duration for the first year of thirteen months, with the option to then extend for one or two years, at a lower cost than currently charged by the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
