Queensland residents draw the attention of the House to the sad news that since 1999, koala numbers have declined by 27% in the Redland Shire and by 26% in the Koala Coast respectively, with potential extinction likely to occur throughout the area in less than 20 years unless an urgent recovery plan for the species is launched immediately. In this context, the importance of conserving, protecting and expanding contiguous areas of bushland habitat is paramount, and cannot be over-emphasised. Such bushland habitat measures on their own will not be sufficient however, to maintain and bolster the ailing Koala Coast koala population; this is because urban koala habitat is also intrinsic to the wellbeing and continued existence of the entire koala population. Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to ensure the remaining koala habitat in the rural and urban areas of the Koala Coast, particularly in the Redland Shire, be fully protected.
