TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the investigation by DERM into a proposed Super Quarry on Muntalunga Range south of Townsville.  The community is appalled consideration is being given to a quarry in such close proximity to the coastal plain and RAMSAR Wetland site 42 and to the rural residential suburbs of Alligator Creek, Nome, Julago and the southern suburbs of Townsville.  The social amenity and ecological values of the area will be destroyed and the safety of residents and their properties jeopardised.  This proposal contravenes the spirit of the Australian and Queensland Governments Queensland Wetlands Program and Integrating Wetlands Management into Regional NRM Plans.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to reject this proposal and source the materials required from one of the many existing quarries in the area or a location with minimal impact on the environment and rural residential suburbs like Alligator Creek, Nome, Julago, Southern Townsville and the pending Rocky Springs development.
