TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland citizens draws to the attention of the House to tackle the escalating issue of youth crime by enacting ‘Vyleen’s Law’. This legislation would grant judges the authority to impose stricter sentences on serious repeat offenders, serving as a deterrent and safeguarding communities. We also request that the bail conditions for serious repeat offenders be reviewed to ensure they are appropriate and effective in preventing reoffending. Additionally, we urge the Queensland Government to prioritise the provision of comprehensive wrap-around services aimed at rehabilitating young offenders. These services should address educational, vocational, mental health, and social needs to facilitate successful reintegration into society. Furthermore, we call on the Queensland Government to lead the development of a National Youth Crime Intervention Framework. This framework should foster collaboration among state and federal agencies, law enforcement, and community organisations to implement evidence-based strategies aimed at addressing the root causes of youth crime. By swiftly implementing ‘Vyleen’s Law’, providing wrap-around services, reviewing bail conditions, and spearheading a National Youth Crime Intervention Framework, the Queensland Government can effectively combat youth crime and build safer communities. We implore all members of Parliament to support these measures and work collaboratively towards a safer Queensland.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to legislate a range of measures to address the issue of escalating youth crime and for this legislation to be known as ‘Vyleen’s Law’.
