Queensland residents draws the attention of the House that the waste company Cleanaway is planning to build a waste incinerator in the Scenic Rim.

Waste incineration is the most expensive and polluting way to make energy or manage our waste.

Incinerators emit a range of serious pollutants - microplastics, heavy metals, dioxins, and furans. Harmful to human health and contribute to climate change.

Now is the time we need to transition to a sustainable zero waste management system. Incinerators undermine recycling and reusing as a constant stream of waste needs to feed the furnace.

In Europe there is a decline in incinerators being built with the realisation of the widespread harm. France has recently placed a ban on consuming backyard eggs in 410 municipalities due to dioxin contamination.

The Australian Public Health Association, after taking a systematic review, has recommended that "New incinerators should be located away from areas of food production. Food grown near an incinerator should be avoided."

Scenic Rim is an area of environmental value, scenic rural beauty, close knit communities and is a food growing area.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all in its power to stop an incinerator being built in the Scenic Rim at Bromelton.
