TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that the signatories to this petition do not want the Maroochy Shire Council's new proposed landfill site at Ferntree Creek Road, Kulangoor, north of Nambour, to be approved by the State Government. The Heavy Vehicles planned to service the site, 65 trucks per day between 9am and 3pm, will increase traffic on the Nambour Connection Road to intolerable levels. The majority of these trucks will travel the Bruce Highway, and use the Parklands Interchange. However, with no northern access ramp at this interchange, trucks travelling north will travel the Connection Road southwards to the Bli Bli interchange or northwards to the Yandina Interchange. At the Ackerman Road / Connection Road Intersection, every truck will turn right across the traffic at least once during its visit to the dump. . To reduce traffic in Ackerman Road, the Council intends to relocate the Kulangoor Cemetery entrance to the Nambour Connection Road on a blind sweeping left bend which over the years has contributed to at least three road deaths. We acknowledge that the Government has not yet received the Council's submission. Your petitioners therefore request the House to ensure that, when the application for this site is submitted, the Government thoroughly scrutinises and rejects it to ensure the safety of those using the Nambour Connection Road is not compromised.
