TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
We the undersigned citizens of Queensland draws to the attention of the house the legislation known as “Restricted dogs Legislation” in Chapter 17A of the Local Government Act 1993 which as at the 1 June 2002 gave Local Councils the power to ban certain breeds of dogs in their area. This legislation is unworkable and is causing many innocent family pets to be destroyed unnecessarily because they are being wrongly mistaken for banned breeds. It is also costing dog owners and ratepayers many thousands of dollars in legal expenses. We believe no breed of dog should be banned, for this gives people a false sense of security around other breeds of dogs that aren't banned and may cause more dog attacks. This legislation has the potential to be extended to banning more and more breeds of dogs. Education on how to be responsible dog owners and how to act around dogs would prevent more dog attacks than banning or regulating breeds. Your petitioners therefore request the House to abolish this legislation urgently.
