TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
The petition of electors of the Division of Charters Towers draws to the attention of the House the state of the Clermont to Alpha road. For more than 30 years the residents of Clermont and Alpha have been requesting the sealing of this road. The route between Tambo and Clermont is a significant trucking route for the transport of livestock linking north and south. It is a type 2 road train route and as such attracts a large amount of traffic. Over the years there have been a great number of accidents along this road due to the amount of traffic. This route is also home to the magnificent Drummond and Narrien Ranges which attract a large number of tourists however in wet weather or between gradings, the road is inaccessible and dangerous. Your petitioners therefore request that the House require the Minister of Transport to give priority to the importance of having this section sealed for the safety of all road users, the promotion of the area as a tourism venture and the efficiency of the cattle industry. . Your petitioners also point out that the journey for travelers in inland Queensland will be significantly shortened by this sealing thereby reducing the traffic on coastal highways and promoting tourism in rural areas.
