TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the reallocation of funding for community legal services in the Moreton Bay Region which has seen the Moreton Bay Regional Community Legal Service's funding not being renewed.

Moreton Bay Regional Community Legal Service has been providing advices and legal assistance for twenty-six years servicing the region and your petitioners do not wish their skills and commitment to be lost to the community.

Your petitioners support the provision of comprehensive legal assistance in the rapidly growing region which has high levels of disadvantage and is under-resourced in terms of services and infrastructure.

There is large diversity of residents in both urban and rural areas. There is overwhelming demand for advices on family law, domestic and family violence, wills, estate administration and commercial disputes. Often these issues are compounded in more remote rural areas.

The region has large groups of Culturally and Linguistic Diverse and Indigenous populations. Moreton Bay Regional Community Legal Service has built trust and maintained working relationships with both groups. Staff members include Polynesian, Indian and Indigenous workers.

Moreton Bay Regional Community Legal Service is adept at responding to the challenges the region presents for residents of the Moreton Region, particularly for those who cannot access other Legal Services.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to do all in its power to call upon the government to increase funding for community legal services in the Moreton Region.
