TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House that the dangers associated with mine tunnels, or adits, are obvious. The dangers found in old mines include explosives, hazardous chemicals and tunnels are full of water which enters the water table.

Mine tunnels in Ipswich suburbs are well mapped and well recorded in Government data, and in the Ipswich local government draft planning scheme map ov6, and pose serious threats to the city of Ipswich, but the Government permitted homes to be built over them and have permitted waste companies to fill voids over these tunnels which transverse under Ipswich. The timber supports in the tunnels are actually very loose and ready to fall apart at the slightest touch. Water now fills these tunnels to a level of 12m above surrounding housing estates. The Queensland Government has known of the dangers of the underground tunnels, but permitted the waste industry to dump millions of tonnes of contaminated waste and chemicals into or on top of these tunnels.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to legislate to give all Ipswich residents the same guarantee as in the Mineral Resources Act 1989, Chapter 12, Part 2, s334R and 334S "the Collingwood Park State guarantee." Which is a compensation guarantee for any damage or affects to any home or property in all Ipswich Suburbs and a compensation guarantee against damage to human health of residents, which may be caused by waste Industries operations at New Chum, Swanbank, Jeebropilly or other Ipswich suburbs.
