Queensland Citizens draws to the attention of the House: when a working Corrective Services Officer is a victim of serious assault in the course of duty under section 340 of the Criminal Code the maximum penalty for the assailant is seven years imprisonment. Currently for every other public officer including Police, Paramedics and Nurses suffering the same circumstance, the maximum penalty under the criminal code is 14 years imprisonment.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to: amend or omit relevant clauses of Section 340 of the Criminal Code and any other relevant legislative instrument necessary to effect consistent maximum sentencing is applied to perpetrators of unlawful assault against any member, officer or employee of a service established for a public purpose under an Act.
