TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the tragic death on the Warrego Highway in the built up area within the town of Yuleba and the:

  • six years, the community and the Maranoa Regional Council have requested the Department of Transport and Main Roads to reduce the speed limit from 80km/h to 60km/h on this stretch of highway,
  • ongoing safety concerns of residents, children, elderly people and truck drivers who cross the road on foot to access services on both sides of the highway.
  • inappropriateness of the Department of Transport and Main Roads Speed Limit Review for the Warrego Highway near the township of Yuleba in October 2016 that deemed the 80km/h speed limit appropriate.
  • community lack of faith in the processes outlined in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices and methodology in determining the appropriate speed through the township of Yuleba.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to Direct the Department of Transport and Main Roads to urgently reduce the speed limit on the Warrego Highway in the built up area of Yuleba to 60km/h; based on the community and anecdotal evidence presented to the Department over a period of more than six years to ensure that there is no further loss of life along this section of road.
