TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the Queensland Government's proposed closure of Nyanda State High School (SHS). This will negatively impact students and families as well as teaching and support staff.  The potential closure of Nyanda SHS is considered short sighted as it does not recognise demographic and population changes that have occurred and will continue to do so.  It is projected that enrolments will increase with the pending introduction of the “flying start” – year 7 students transitioning to secondary schools – and higher density living in the immediate area as articulated in the Brisbane City Council's long term community plan – Our Shared Vision: Living in Brisbane 2026.  Nyanda SHS provides high quality public education and offers a range of innovative academic, cultural and sporting programs that have been designed to assist all students to reach their full potential.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to call on the Minister for Education, Training and Employment to not close Nyanda SHS and to ensure the school continues to provide education to existing and new students into the future.
