TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland citizens draws to the attention of the House that in relation to Youth Boot Camps:

  • During the last State election campaign the LNP promised to introduce boot camps as an alternative to youth detention centres.
  • The Member for Hervey Bay during parliamentary debate on the 27th November 2012 argued passionately for the benefits of Hervey Bay's Hard Yakka Youth Boot Camp program.
  • The Attorney-General interjected in support of the Member for Hervey Bay's speech by providing the cost to the State of keeping a youth in detention ie $200,000.
  • The LNP Government have subsequently established two youth boot camp program trials at the Gold Coast and Cairns and have chosen not to support the establishment of a youth boot camp trial in Hervey Bay.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to pass a motion that calls on the State LNP Government and Labor Federal Government to immediately provide funding to the Hard Yakka Youth Boot Camp, one of the most proven successful programs of its type in Australia.
