This petition of residents of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that the Newman Government has written to public housing tenants across Queensland, proposing substantial changes to public housing. These drastic changes are likely to have negative impacts on tenants, including forced relocation, inappropriate shared housing arrangements and higher rents.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to call upon the Housing and Public Works Minister and the Department of Housing and Public Works to guarantee that:

·         no tenants will be disadvantaged by these reforms

·         any rent rises for affordable housing will not place further cost-of-living pressures on families and individuals who are already struggling to pay their bills

·         any individuals and families living in the dwellings identified by the Minister as under-occupied be allocated a suitable roof over their heads in the same community where they choose to live now, and

·         the changes will not result in the use of private-sector management of public housing, as this will result in poor service to tenants and will place added stress on the already-stretched private rental market.
