TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

The Petition of residents in Surfers Paradise Electorate draws to the attention of the House:

(a)  Areas of State land situated along the beach from Clifford Street Surfers Paradise to Fern Street and thence to First Ave Broadbeach.

(b)  There is considerable public concern of increased crime, reduced public safety and of environmental impact, should a concrete pathway be constructed on the Road Reserve.

(c)  Though these areas of State land are under the management of Gold Coast City Council, the Government of Queensland has ultimate control of the areas and has the ability to preclude any such construction or development that may impact the Road Reserve.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to:

1.  Call on the Hon the Minister for the Environment to consider the permanent closure of the Public Road Reserve which will ensure both the protection of the dunes and beach vegetation and the safety of concerned residents whilst maintaining the current beach access.
2.  Call on the Hon the Minister for Main Roads, Fisheries and Marine Infrastructure to consider alternative measures along Garfield and Northcliffe Terraces to improve transit for pedestrians and cyclists.
