The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the proposed closure of the Parklands showgrounds on the Gold Coast to make way for a large housing project adjacent to the new University Hospital and Griffith University.  The closure will leave many groups including the Gold Coast show, the Big Day Out Festival, Indoor Sports Centre and Gold Coast Harness Racing Club without a large venue to hold community events, sport and festivals, as well as severely impacting on employment and adding further to the traffic congestion in the area.

Your petitioners, therefore request the House to provide an alternate site for its housing project which will not adversely impact on the Gold Coast and rob the community of a valuable venue.
