The petition of electors of the Division of Mirani draws to the attention of the House that residents of the Clarke Creek community have limited access to their nearest service town of Middlemount due to unsafe road conditions and low level bridge on the May Downs Road.  Although only 69 km in distance, the time to ravel the May Downs road in dry weather conditions exceeds one hour due to bull dust, pot holes and wheel nuts.  In wet weather conditions the road is dangerously slippery and will not be attempted by residents.  children have missed an entire term of school due to flooding of the low level bridge despite little rain in the district.  There were five accidents on the road last year.  there has been one fatality.  Residents are travelling up to 200 kilometres to either Rockhampton or Mackay to access  services that are available in Middlemount.  This also disadvantages Middlemount service providers and business owners.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to order the remaining 38 km of gravelled May Downs Road be bitumen sealed, and that the level of the bridge be raised as a matter of priority in the 2010-11 budget.
