The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that:1. Given the requirement for a reliable water supply for the rapidly growing population of south-east Queensland;2. Given the Federal Government’s decision to reject the proposal to build a dam at Traveston Crossing on the Mary River; 3. In light of the Queensland Premier’s consequential announcement of the intention of the State Government to build new Desalination Plants on industrial sites at Marcoola and Lytton; and4. On the understanding that the Queensland Water Commissioner has identified Bribie Island as a potential future site for a Desalination Plant.Your petitioners reject the Commissioner’s identification of Bribie Island as a potential future site for a Desalination Plant on the grounds that such industrialisation, and that which would inevitably follow, is not compatible with the environmental sensitivity and the existing residential nature of Bribie Island.Your petitioners, therefore request the House to take action to ensure that Bribie Island is removed permanently from the list of potential Desalination Plant sites in Queensland.
