TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that: • The Queensland Water Commission has shortlisted a 63 hectare site on South Stradbroke Island for further investigation as a potential desalination plant; • The site, which is adjacent to conservation park is vegetated with 'of concern' regional ecosystems and comprises essential habitat for the Wallum sedgefrog; the Wallum froglet and the Wallum rocketfrog; • Brine concentrate produced by a desalination plant at the site would be discharged into a Marine National Park (Green Zone); • The establishment of a desalination plant on South Stradbroke Island is completely incompatible with the important conservation intent for the Island and would destroy the visual amenity of the Broadwater. Your petitioners therefore request the House to: • Request the Queensland Government to reject the site from further consideration as a desalination plant; • Extend the South Stradbroke Island Conservation Park to include the site under consideration (Lot 17 WD2688 and Lot 18 WD1474); • Protect for future generations the conservation values present on the Island.
