Queensland Residents draws to the attention of the House: the imminent removal or demolition by the Cairns Port Authority of the building originally known as the Cairns Aquatic Clubhouse and more recently as the Cairns Yacht Club building, currently sited where built by the founding citizens of Cairns. The residents of Queensland have previously forwarded a petition of over 5000 signatures on this matter but wish to re-state their views as strongly and as urgently as possible. The residents further submit that the building is of high historical significance to them and it is their belief that the building has a role both as a living museum for the benefit of all Australians as an ongoing social centre for the community of Far North Queensland. Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to direct the Cairns Port Authority, via its two shareholders, the Hon John Mickel MP and the Hon Andrew Fraser MP, to stay an order or requirement for removal or demolition of the building allowing it to remain in situ.
