Budget Week Sittings - 11 - 14 June 2019

The Queensland Parliament's annual budget week sittings will occur from 11 to 14 June 2019.

On 11 June 2019, the Treasurer will deliver the budget speech and table the Appropriation Bills. (The Appropriation Bills are the way in which the Parliament considers and authorises the proposed expenditure of public funds for specified purposes.)

The second reading debate on the Appropriation Bills will occur on 1
3 and 14 June 2019

At the conclusion of the second reading debate, the Appropriation Bills will be referred to the Parliament's portfolio committees for further scrutiny. This is known as the estimates process, with each of the Parliament’s seven portfolio committees tasked with scrutinising the proposed budgets for each of the government departments that they are responsible for overseeing. Collectively, the seven portfolio committees oversee and scrutinise all government departments.

These Estimates committee hearings will occur from 23 July to 1 August 2019. Following these hearings, each committee reports their findings to the Parliament.

This scrutiny by the Parliament of the government's annual financial requirements is an important feature of the legislature's role.
