Queensland residents draw to the attention of the House that Queensland’s anti-discrimination legislation contains transphobic exemptions that allow discrimination against transgender and gender diverse people when working with children.

Queensland's Anti-Discrimination Act allows for discrimination "on the basis of lawful sexual activity or gender identity" if it is "reasonably necessary to protect the physical, psychological or emotional wellbeing of minors" in the workplace.

Transgender and gender diverse people should not be made second class citizens. Laws like this perpetuate harmful stereo types that trans and gender diverse people pose risks to children, and infringe on the civil and workplace rights of trans and gender diverse people.

Queensland is the only state to have an exemption like this. The Northern Territory has recently announced a reform to remove discrimination from their legislation, we should do the same.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to remove queerphobic legislation from the Anti-Discrimination Act.
