Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the issue of period poverty in Queensland school students. Children without access to period products are more likely to miss school, have poorer educational engagement and attainment, and feel shame and embarrassment associated with menstruation.

The Victorian Government has been providing free sanitary items in all public schools since 2019, and in 2022 the New South Wales Government announced it is following suit. We will not sit by and let Queensland students be left behind.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to provide free menstrual hygiene products in all schools to help ensure that young people’s educations is not negatively impacted by their periods.
