Strong and Sustainable Resource Communities Bill 2016

On 8 November 2016, the Minister for State Development and Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Hon Dr Anthony Lynham, introduced the Strong and Sustainable Resource Communities Bill 2016. 

The Bill was referred to the Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources Committee for consideration.

 About the Bill

The objectives of the Strong and Sustainable Resource Communities Bill 2016, as set out in the explanatory notes, are to:

  • ensure that regional communities in Queensland in the vicinity of large resource projects benefit from the operation of those projects
  • amend the Mineral Resources Act 1989 to prohibit certain activities including in situ gasification of coal (underground coal gasification) and in situ gasification of oil shale.

Public Hearings

Public hearings were held in Brisbane, Emerald, Middlemount, Moranbah, Mackay, Rockhampton and Mt Isa in February 2017.
