The Auditor-General’s report, Follow up of 2010 audit recommendations, Report to Parliament No. 2: 2012–13 (the 2012 report) was tabled on 30 October 2012. Part of the report of was referred to the committee for consideration on 6 March 2013. The part referred to the committee follows up on issues relevant to national parks; two other follow up audits in the 2012 Report have been referred to other portfolio committees.

In 2010, the Auditor General reported on a systems audit of the former Department of Environment and Resource Management’s (the department) systems to conserve the state’s natural and cultural heritage. The Report to Parliament No. 9 for 2010, Sustainable management of national parks and protected areas (the 2010 Report), was tabled in the Legislative Assembly in October 2010.

The 2010 Report identified weaknesses and inconsistencies in the department’s systems and concluded that the department was not adequately monitoring, evaluating and reporting on the extent to which its actions were protecting park values. The Auditor-General made seven recommendations, six of which were accepted by the department.

The Auditor General’s 2012 follow up audit report examined the implementation of the 2010 recommendations. The 2012 Report states:

... the department has implemented only one of the seven recommendations made in the original audit report. Overall progress is not satisfactory given the department’s acceptance of the 2010 recommendations and its commitment to act by October 2011. (p 22)

The committee has resolved to examine the department's implementation of the Auditor-General’s recommendations in the 2010 report and report to the Legislative Assembly.
