The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the lack of Cardiac Surgical Facilities in the Cairns region. This petition therefore request the House to establish a Cardiac Surgical Facility in Cairns. Currently the closest Cardiac Unit is in Townsville, a four hour drive from Cairns. Some Cardiac patients may even have to travel as far away as Brisbane to access the Cardiac care that they require, an expensive and stressful journey for someone who is not well, not to mention the distress suffered as a result of being away from loved ones. We beg your consideration of our petition on which we have obtained Signatures, to set up a cardiac Surgical Unit in Cairns.
