TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
This petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of Members and the Speaker Queensland residents’ concerns about current freshwater extraction from North Stradbroke lsland (due to visually obvious, existing negative impacts on the Island's water bodies and environment). We also wish to express our opposition to the Queensland Government proposal to further increase water extraction to supply to the SEQ water grid. We petitioners therefore request Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland to give a guarantee that a thorough peer-reviewed environmental impact assessment of existing water extraction from North Stradbroke Island is facilitated and completed. We also seek a government guarantee that there will be no further consideration of increased water extraction from North Stradbroke Island’s ground water aquifer until existing operations are reviewed, and the existing negative impacts on the Island’s water bodies and environment are fully assessed and reversed. Also and most importantly that the state government guarantee their support for the protection of North Stradbroke Islands unique hydrological system, aquifer and ecosystem. Considering other Islands which area part of the same system as Stradbroke within the SEQ great sandy region, have national and international environmental protection
