Citizens of Queensland draw to the attention of the House that the proposed four-lane upgrade of the Kuranda Range Road will harm the environment and take too long to build (13-15 years). This will lead to cost blow-outs. Your petitioners, therefore, request that instead of the four-lane, multi-bridged upgrade, that a road tunnel be constructed instead. A tunnel would be completed far sooner (estimated time 2 years), be environmentally friendly, and far safe. Heavy transports, should continue to use the existing Kuranda Range Road to provide separation from the growing volumes of other vehicular traffic. A tunnel would also provide the most efficient connection between the coast and the Tablelands for both day-to-day use, and in any emergency situation such as tsunamis and cyclones.
