The petition of electors of the Division of Charters Towers draws to the attention of the House the urgent need to seal the Forsayth to Georgetown road. The route between these towns has seen a chaotic increase in the level of traffic due to expansions in mineral development and increased tourism. Forsayth is home to the magnificent Cobbold Gorge, a popular tourist destination however the experience to visit is denied for many tourists due to the poor state of the road. There is less than 30 kilometres to be sealed however the unsealed section is only graded twice a year and is extremely bare and corrugated. Students must travel from Forsayth to Georgetown regularly to participate in sporting and cultural events, and the wear and tear on family vehicles is a great burden. Your petitioners therefore request that the House require the Minister of Transport to give priority to sealing this section for the safety of all road users, the promotion of the area as a tourism venture and the efficiency of the mining industries.
