The petition of citizens of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that the original Shingle Inn in the centre of Brisbane was opened nearly 70 years ago. It is distinguished for its beauty and for its historical associations, and the memories it holds in the hearts of many Queenslanders. It is therefore, appropriate that the Shingle Inn was placed on the Queensland Heritage Register and, when the building was to be demolished, the parts of the Shingle Inn were carefully preserved and stored, on the explicit understanding that the shingle Inn would be reconstructed in the new building. Many citizens of Queensland were therefore horrified to learn that the Shingle Inn had been removed from the Queensland Heritage Register in September 2004, and that the intention of its owners and the developers were that it would have no place in the new building. Your petitioners therefore request the House to review the removal of the Shingle Inn from the Queensland Heritage Register, ensure that the Shingle Inn is reinstated in the Central Business District as originally as possible, as was agreed, and reinstate it on the Queensland Heritage Register ensuring that it remains protected in the future.
