The Petition of Citizens of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the loss of our ‘Cultural Heritage’ by the proposed demolition or removal of the Cairns Yacht Club (CYC) from its historic site, which is causing us distress, grievance and a great sense of personal loss. Cultural wellbeing is the vitality that communities and individuals enjoy through participation in recreation, creative, cultural activities and the freedom to retain, interpret and express their arts, history, heritage and traditions. Our petition to save the CYC is necessary to preserve our indisputable right to live with this freedom. The CYC, built in 1902 as the Cairns Aquatic Club (CAC), is described on the Cairns City Heritage Study 1994, and identified on the Register of the National Estate. The CYC and the CAC, has existed on this site for 92 years, has featured in the lives of thousands of people from across Queensland and Australia, and is unique in that it commands the only view of a natural sand beach on the northern side of Cairns Inlet. The CYC is a living reminder of happy times, regattas; our pioneering youth; learning to sail; a place that fosters good citizens; athletic skill; community values; and the positive aspects of life that are incalculably cherished. Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to protect this historical site and heritage listed building, by whatever means the House has at its disposal.
