TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
Queensland citizens draws to the attention of the House the planned removal of large trees from the grounds of Momingside State School. These trees are significant to the local area for the following reasons. • This is the only shaded natural area for the children to play in that is near to the classrooms. • There are alternative sites for the construction of a building. • Only 20 trees as large as these exist in the school grounds. They represent 25% of all the large trees in the school. There is only one tree larger than the big fig tree. • These trees are a primary food source for the possum family that has lived in the pool grandstand since it was built. The removal of these trees will cause stress and the probable death of this possum community. Your petitioners therefore request the House to find an alternative site for the construction of a Special Education Unit within the grounds of Morningside State School or investigate other suitable venues in the Bulimba electorate.
